Ecumenism: A Traditional Catholic Critique of Vatican II Teachings
I argue that Vatican II and the later Code of Canon Law departed from earlier Catholic teaching on ecumenism and prayer with non-Catholics. I cite Pope Pius XI’s 1928 encyclical, *Mortalium Animos*, which states that Catholics were not permitted to participate in meetings of non-Catholics. I also refer to Canon 1258 of the 1917 Code of Canon Law, which prohibited participation in non-Catholic religious rites. From this traditionalist perspective, the changes introduced after Vatican II represent a break with historic Catholic doctrine. The issue remains a major point of disagreement among Catholics who hold different views on Church tradition and ecumenism.
