Agape is the selfless and sacrificial love taught in the Bible. It is not based on emotions, attraction or what someone can offer in return. It is a deliberate choice to seek another person’s good. Unlike friendship, family affection or romantic love, agape reflects God’s unconditional love for humanity. As 1 John 4:8 teaches, “God is love.” Understanding agape can shape how Christians relate to God, family, friends, strangers and even those who hurt them.
