May 30: Truthful Remembrance for Biafra’s Fallen
Every May 30, we honour the fathers, mothers and children who perished during the Biafran war. Yet memory without honest reflection risks becoming mere ritual. More than fifty years on, Nigeria still hesitates to confront the true scale of those atrocities. Acknowledging the massacres, starvation and displacement does not weaken a nation—it strengthens its moral foundation, as seen in Germany, South Africa and Rwanda. This day is not only about the past. It is a warning for the future. True reconciliation requires courage to face painful history, not silence. Only then can Nigeria build unity and peace that endure for generations. May the memories of Biafra’s victims challenge our conscience and inspire genuine scholarship, national reflection and a lasting commitment to justice.
