When Money Becomes a Man-Made God

I grew up hearing people say they would never worship a man-made god. Many of us picture an idol carved from wood or stone. But I have come to see that idols can take subtler forms. Money is not evil. It is a useful tool. Yet it can become an idol when it replaces God as the source of our identity, security, power and happiness. People sometimes sacrifice their peace, values, relationships and integrity in pursuit of wealth. Money can provide comfort and opportunities, but it cannot guarantee peace, purpose, a loving home or eternal life. The question is not only whether we worship a man-made god. It is whether money, fame, power or possessions have taken the highest place in our hearts. Let money serve you, but never let it become your god.
