Nnamdi Kanu’s Warnings Ignored as Oyo Schools Come Under Deadly Bandit Attack
Nnamdi Kanu repeatedly warned South Westerners to demand a referendum to protect their region from bandits and jihadists. Those warnings in 2015, 2017 and later went unheeded as insecurity worsened. On Friday morning, armed terrorists struck three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Gunmen on motorcycles opened fire at Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School. The assistant headmaster of L.A. Primary, Joel Adesiyan, was shot dead while fleeing through a window. An okada rider also died in the crossfire. The principal of Community Grammar, five teachers and an unknown number of pupils were abducted. Residents say the attackers moved swiftly between schools and fled into a nearby forest reserve, burning the principal’s vehicle in their escape. The traditional ruler lamented the two-hour delay before security operatives arrived. In response, the state education board has temporarily closed schools in Oriire and neighbouring areas while police and military teams launch search-and-rescue operations.
