NLC Praises FG’s 100% Gratuity Plan for Retiring Civil Servants
The Federal Government has approved a new exit benefit scheme for federal civil servants. Under this plan, retiring workers will receive a gratuity equal to 100% of their total annual emoluments on top of their contributory pension. The policy takes effect on January 1, 2026, and applies to staff with at least ten years of service. Joe Ajaero said gratuity is a reward for loyal service. He explained that gratuity differs from pension because it provides immediate financial support. It helps retirees start new ventures and cover expenses while waiting for their pension payments. He urged the government to settle all outstanding gratuities for workers previously denied this benefit. Ajaero noted that no law abolished gratuity, so fairness demands that past retirees receive what they are owed. He also encouraged private-sector organisations to adopt similar gratuity schemes. Such a move would foster a culture of gratitude and fairness across all industries.
