At the 126th inaugural lecture of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Engineering Professor Ugochukwu Chuka Okonkwo urged greater local content in Nigeria’s engineering sector. He proposed that 30% of machine components in critical industries should be sourced domestically. Okonkwo highlighted materials as the foundation of innovation and noted that modern machines now interpret and adapt rather than merely follow commands. He stressed the need for robust partnerships between universities, industry, and research institutes to drive end-user-focused engineering research. He also appealed to the Federal Government to revive the Ajaokuta Steel Complex with clear timelines. The event concluded with the Vice-Chancellor decorating Prof. Okonkwo with the University’s Medal of Honour.
