I Nearly Forgot My Okpe Language After 20 Years in Yoruba Land
Good evening, my people. I’m an Okpe man from the Warri area of Delta State. I spent 20 years in Yoruba land, where I went to school and ended up speaking Yoruba more often than my own language. One day, my mother asked me for a simple Okpe word at home, and I couldn’t remember it. I felt so ashamed that I decided to write down every Okpe word I could recall, so my child wouldn’t experience the same thing. I’ve written down more than 1,000 words so far. If you’re Urhobo, Okpe, Isoko or Itsekiri, can you still speak your language well, or has city life made it harder? Share an Okpe or Urhobo word and its meaning in the comments. Let’s learn together.
