My Stepfather Tried to Drag Me From Church After Years of Abuse
I was six when my mother married my stepfather. What followed were years of violence, threats and control in our home. My mother repeatedly tried to leave, but financial pressure and family circumstances made it difficult to stay away. In November 2016, my mother took my siblings and me and left with only a few belongings. A month later, my stepfather and another man tried to force me out of a church service. People intervened, and we went to the police station, but I was too shocked to understand what happened afterwards. The violence shaped how I handled fear, conflict and relationships. Years later, I recognised similar controlling behaviour in my own marriage and left with my baby before it became physical violence. I am rebuilding my life, pursuing work in arts and marketing, and seeking healing. I also hope to support women and children facing abuse, because leaving an unsafe home can save lives.
