Court Hears Ribadu Confirmed Wiretapped NSA Call Referenced by El-Rufai
The trial of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai on treason and national security charges resumed in Abuja’s Federal High Court. Prosecutors played a televised interview in which El-Rufai said a private conversation between the NSA and ICPC chairman Nuhu Ribadu was wiretapped and forwarded to him, arguing that governments routinely monitor communications. A prosecution witness told the court that Ribadu was interviewed and confirmed the content of the flagged conversation. Statements from the programme anchor, an activist-lawyer and the cameraman who set up the recording equipment were admitted into evidence as Exhibits C, C1, D and E. A preliminary investigation report was also tendered as Exhibit F. Under cross-examination, the witness conceded that no forensic analysis of NSA devices or IP addresses was conducted, but maintained that Ribadu’s confirmation made further technical steps unnecessary. The court was adjourned until June 22 and 23 for the next hearing.
