INEC Warns AI Deepfakes Could Undermine Trust in Nigeria’s 2027 Election
INEC has warned that artificial intelligence-driven disinformation, including manipulated videos, audio and images, could threaten public confidence in the 2027 general election. The commission said credible elections depend not only on ballots, BVAS and result sheets, but also on whether Nigerians can access and trust accurate information about the process. It warned that targeted false messages could give different voter groups conflicting versions of events. INEC said it is auditing its election technology, carrying out security and disaster-recovery checks, and considering a mock presidential election before 2027. The proposed test would assess voter accreditation, result transmission and the result-viewing system under election-day conditions. The commission also plans faster responses to misinformation, stronger collaboration with media and fact-checkers, and wider voter education as more young Nigerians rely on smartphones for political information.
