I grew up watching my father treat women with respect and advocate for their independence. But after moving into my own apartment, I was attacked by a driver I had employed for only two weeks after confronting him over missing money. He lunged into my car as I tried to leave the compound, while security guards nearby delayed before intervening. Although I reported the case and he was arrested, the slow court process and COVID-19 delays meant the case eventually stalled. The attack left me afraid in my own home and made me more cautious about hiring people. It also deepened my understanding of gender-based violence, the failures of bystanders, and why conversations about women’s safety, equality and accountability must continue.
