Minister Umahi Details Final Moments of Nurse Mary Habila Before Her Death

Minister Umahi Details Final Moments of Nurse Mary Habila Before Her Death — 1 of 3
1 / 3

A nurse employed at the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital died at Minister David Umahi’s country home in Uburu on June 27, sparking nationwide calls for an independent investigation. At a recent press briefing, the Minister said Mary Habila was like a daughter to him. He clarified she was a nurse—not a physiotherapist—and that he had been covering her medical bills while she sought treatment in Turkey. Umahi revealed that before her death, Habila spoke with her boyfriend and complained of nose bleeding. Her close friend Anita Baaki later filed an affidavit describing the final hours they spent together. According to the affidavit, Baaki and Habila travelled from Abuja on June 24 and stayed in adjoining rooms at a staff chalet. Habila returned exhausted from an errand on the evening of June 26 and planned to shower before bed. She was found unresponsive the next morning.

It's surprising that a minister would host a staff member overnight without clear security or official record of events.
