₦10 Trillion Spent, Yet Nigeria’s Power Generation Remains Below 4,500MW

Nigeria has committed about ₦10 trillion to the power sector since the 2013 privatisation, yet average generation has remained near 4,500MW. This is far below the estimated national demand of more than 30,000MW, while many areas still face poor supply and blackouts. NERC data shows that average hourly generation was 4,112.72MW in the first quarter of 2026. The sector is also facing a deep liquidity crisis, with generation companies claiming ₦6.2 trillion in unpaid obligations. The Federal Government disputes the figure, saying verified liabilities stand at about ₦3.3 trillion. The Power Ministry says it is resetting the sector through a transmission audit, grid-stabilisation projects, expanded metering, debt settlements and a proposed super-grid programme. It says Nigerians should see improved grid reliability, lower losses and wider electricity access within the next two to three years.
