I Introduced an Online Friend to My Group Chat, Then His Lies Unravelled
I met Soji online during the 2020 lockdown, and we became close while supporting each other through job searches. I trusted him enough to introduce him to my wider friend group. In 2022, friends began telling me that he had allegedly borrowed ₦600,000, made false claims about his life and career, and avoided people when they asked questions. He told us the loan was for a medical emergency involving a younger brother. After his arrest over the unpaid loan, Amos said he learned that the story was untrue and that Soji’s family had cut ties with him over similar allegations. My friends and I removed him from our lives, but the experience left me more cautious about friendships formed online.
