UNDP Report: 17.9 Million More Nigerians Fell Into Multidimensional Poverty in Three Years
Nigeria recorded the world’s largest increase in multidimensional poverty, with 17.9 million additional people falling into poverty between 2021 and 2024, according to the 2026 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index. The report, released by the United Nations Development Programme and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, said Nigeria had previously recorded progress between 2018 and 2021 before the reversal. Nigeria’s increase was higher than Afghanistan’s 5.3 million during its latest assessment period. The findings raise serious concerns about living standards, access to basic services and the economic pressures facing millions of Nigerian households.
