Niger Alerts Kaduna River Communities Over Possible Shiroro Dam Water Release
The Niger State Government has warned communities along the Kaduna River Basin to prepare for possible rising water levels as inflows into the Shiroro Reservoir increase during the 2026 rainy season. The government said a controlled release of water from the reservoir may be necessary in September to protect the dam and reduce risks to downstream communities. The advisory followed information from the Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Plant operator and rainfall projections from NiMet. Residents in flood-prone areas, farmers on river floodplains, fishermen and boat operators have been urged to stay vigilant and take extra precautions. Community leaders are also asked to share the warning promptly, while authorities continue to monitor the situation.
