Why I Prefer Calling Jesus by His Hebrew Name, Yeshua
I am not questioning the existence of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, or the Christian belief that he died for our sins, rose from the dead and will return. I want to discuss the name he was known by during his life on earth. Jesus was born into a Jewish family in the time of Hebrew and Aramaic. I believe the name Yeshua, also given as Yahoshua, is closer to the name he would have been called. Its meaning is commonly explained as “Yahweh saves” or “God is salvation.” The English name Jesus developed through translations and changes in pronunciation across languages. Since we have access to the name Yeshua today, I believe Christians should consider using it when referring to him.
