Vietnam Detains Captain After Speedboat Capsizes, Killing 15 Indian Tourists
Vietnamese authorities have detained a 57-year-old speedboat captain after a vessel overturned near Phu Quoc, killing 15 Indian tourists. The boat was carrying 32 tourists and four crew members when it flipped less than half a kilometre from Hon May Rut Ngoai island amid sudden extreme weather. The captain is under investigation for alleged waterway safety violations. Sixteen survivors have been discharged and are returning to India, while one remains in critical condition in a Vietnamese hospital. The victims’ bodies are being sent to Ho Chi Minh City before repatriation. The tour was organised by Lava International for employees, distributors and retail partners. A witness described hearing screams for help as nearby boats rushed to the rescue but arrived too late.
