Reports of young Nigerians allegedly selling kidneys for several million naira raise a troubling question: how desperate must someone be to see a vital organ as a way out of poverty? Organ trafficking is illegal and dangerous, yet unemployment, hunger, rising rents and medical costs can make vulnerable people easy targets for brokers. The issue is not simply about personal choice. A person may technically agree to sell an organ, but that choice is far from free when survival is at stake. Organ-trafficking networks often exploit poor people, while sellers may receive only a small portion of the money involved. Nigeria’s past organ-trafficking scandals have shown the need for stronger enforcement, better healthcare protection and support for vulnerable people. Arresting traffickers matters, but lasting solutions also require jobs, affordable healthcare, support for small businesses and policies that reduce poverty. No young person should see selling a kidney as a business plan.
