Why Is “Enjoyment” So Often Linked to Drinking, Drugs, Sex and Nightlife in Nigeria?

For many Nigerians, especially young people, the word “enjoyment” quickly brings to mind clubs, alcohol, shisha, loud music, expensive tables and hookups. Not everyone sees life this way, but adult nightlife has become strongly tied to the popular image of having a good time. Part of this may be the pressure of everyday survival. Between work, bills, unemployment, family expectations and the constant hustle, a weekend party can feel like an escape. Music videos, celebrity culture and social media also reinforce the idea that wealth and happiness must look like luxury, parties and sexual freedom. Peer pressure makes the association stronger. People who do not drink, smoke or attend certain parties may be labelled boring or accused of forming. Online, people mostly share their best moments, making it seem as if everybody else is constantly outside, spending money and living large. There is nothing wrong with responsible fun, friendship or nightlife. But enjoyment should not depend on intoxication, risky behaviour or impressing strangers. It can also mean good food, travel, football with friends, creative hobbies, rest, meaningful conversations and building a life that genuinely makes you happy.
