How I Escaped Loan Apps, Rent Debt and Years of Bad Money Decisions
I grew up in a comfortable home, but my family’s finances collapsed after my father faced a long workplace investigation. Seeing school fees delayed and hearing “there’s no money” made me afraid of depending on anyone financially. After university, I earned from writing gigs, saved my first ₦100,000, then lost ₦120,000 in a failed agricultural investment. My first banking job brought another setback: a ₦30,000 debt for work clothes turned into seven months of loan-app borrowing and repayments. Higher salaries did not immediately solve my problems. I made costly housing decisions, moved suddenly three times and spent heavily after finally getting room to breathe. I eventually cleared my debts, completed my postgraduate fees and now earn ₦747,000 monthly. I am learning to make financial choices based on what I can truly afford. My next goal is to build savings, diversify my income and stick to a realistic budget.
