FG Insists Federal Unity Colleges Will Reopen Despite King’s College Concession Dispute

The Federal Government says all 115 Federal Unity Colleges will reopen on Monday, September 14, despite a growing dispute over the 35-year concession of King’s College, Lagos. Workers have threatened an indefinite shutdown, while the school has already been closed amid resistance to the planned handover. Education Minister Maruf Tunji Alausa said security agencies had been alerted ahead of resumption. He maintained that the concession to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association is a public-private partnership to rehabilitate, modernise and manage the 116-year-old school, not a sale. The Federal Government, he said, will retain ownership and regulatory oversight. The staff union opposes the handover process and has shut the school, creating uncertainty for students and parents. Parents fear that new management could eventually raise fees and make the formerly federal institution unaffordable, while the PTA argues that current students should complete their education under the terms in place when they were admitted.
