Experts Warn That One in 11 Nigerian Women Faces Breast Cancer Risk
Health experts say breast cancer is placing a growing burden on Nigerian women, with an estimated one in 11 at risk of developing the disease. They added that about 70 to 80 per cent of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages, when treatment is often more difficult and costly. At the 2026 Go Pink Day campaign in Calabar, residents received free breast, cervical and prostate cancer screening, along with eye care, blood donation and first-aid services. Health advocates said awareness must be matched with affordable tests, treatment and improved access to specialists, especially for rural communities. Experts urged people to seek medical attention for breast lumps, skin dimpling, orange-peel-like skin changes or unusual nipple discharge. They noted that not every lump is cancerous, but early checks can improve the chances of successful treatment. Men can also develop breast cancer.
