Australian Police Charge Returned ISIS-Linked Women with Slavery, Third Arrested on Terror Charges
Australian Federal Police have charged two women with slavery offences after they returned from a Syrian refugee camp. The women, aged 53 and 31, were arrested at Melbourne Airport and face crimes against humanity for allegedly owning and using a slave in Syria. They each face up to 25 years in prison. In a related case, a 32-year-old woman was detained at Sydney Airport. She is accused of joining Islamic State in 2015 to be with her husband and faces terror charges carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years. Their return, along with nine children who came back without official support, has stirred political debate over how far the government can go to block citizens linked to extremist groups. Around 21 Australians are still held in a camp in Syria as international efforts continue to manage foreign nationals in the region.
