Ituri Militia Raids Leave at Least 69 Dead in DR Congo

At least 69 people were killed in a series of militia raids across villages in Ituri province, northeast DR Congo. Armed men from the Codeco militia, claiming to protect the Lendu community, carried out attacks on April 28, sources said. These reprisal strikes followed an earlier assault by the Convention for the Popular Revolution, which says it defends the Hema community. Civil society leaders report more than 70 casualties in the back-and-forth violence. Local security sources say 19 attackers and soldiers were also among the dead, and the presence of militia fighters delayed recovery of many bodies. Only 25 victims have been buried so far, with more remains still missing in areas like Bassa. United Nations peacekeepers have rescued nearly 200 people caught in the crossfire. The violence adds to long-running ethnic and resource-driven conflicts in eastern DR Congo, now fueling a humanitarian crisis with nearly one million displaced civilians.
