How IPOB’s Propaganda and Fear Narratives Shaped the Biafra Movement

IPOB gained influence by amplifying misinformation and fear, rather than presenting a clear and realistic roadmap for Biafran self-determination. In my view, any serious independence movement would need broad support across the former Eastern Region, including Rivers, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom, as well as credible international engagement. I believe IPOB instead relied on propaganda and branded critics as saboteurs. Claims about RUGA, Operation Safe Corridor, herder-farmer conflicts and attacks in other parts of the country were presented as evidence of an imminent plan to Islamise or invade the South-East. These narratives created panic and attracted followers who feared for their communities. Now that many people question whether IPOB ever had a workable strategy for achieving Biafra, public frustration has grown. However, calls for violence against any individual are unacceptable and should be rejected.
