Burnham said he held one significant meeting with the club in 2021 while serving as Mayor of Greater Manchester. The scrutiny follows an independent commission’s reported finding that Manchester City breached Premier League financial rules between 2009 and 2018. The report alleged that the club used commercial agreements to channel more than £830 million into its football operations and that some witnesses gave misleading evidence. Manchester City deny wrongdoing and have appealed the verdict. The appeal board is yet to rule, while the Premier League has not announced any sanctions. Burnham says the club’s football case should be treated separately from the owners’ investments in Greater Manchester.
