WAFCON: How a 1-0 Win Over Egypt Can Send Nigeria Through
Nigeria can qualify from the WAFCON group with a 1-0 win over Egypt, even if Nigeria, Zambia and Malawi all finish on six points. CAF applies head-to-head results before overall goal difference. In a three-way tie, the mini-table includes Malawi's 3-2 win over Nigeria, Nigeria's 1-0 win over Zambia, and Zambia's result against Malawi. If Zambia beat Malawi 1-0, all three sides would have a head-to-head goal difference of zero. Nigeria and Malawi would then advance on goals scored in the mini-table, with three each, ahead of Zambia's one. If Zambia beat Malawi 2-0, Zambia would top the mini-table on a +1 goal difference, while Nigeria would finish second on zero and qualify. A 3-2 Zambia win would also leave Nigeria ahead of Zambia because Nigeria won their direct meeting. Nigeria would be eliminated in this three-way, six-point scenario only if Zambia beat Malawi by exactly one goal while scoring at least four goals, such as 4-3 or 5-4. That would leave Nigeria with the fewest goals scored in the head-to-head mini-table.
