Why Agatu Communities Tried to Arm Themselves Against Fulani Herders, Court Hears
The Federal High Court in Abuja has admitted a DSS report showing that some leaders in Agatu LGA, Benue State, stockpiled grenades and ammunition for planned retaliation against Fulani cattle herders. Nine suspects, including Ardo Lawal Mohammed Dono and Ardo Muhammadu Saidu, face charges linked to the massacre of over 100 people in Guma LGA. Evidence includes 18 hand grenades, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and an audio-visual recording of an Agatu youth leader’s interrogation. In the video, Silas Oloche recounts years of attacks on Agatu farms since 2013. He says communities raised over N2 million to buy arms after alleged breaches of peace agreements by herders. The court has ordered a trial-within-trial to determine the voluntariness of Oloche’s extra-judicial statement and adjourned until July 8.
