Public Servants Threaten Three-Day Strike Over Petrol Price and Wage Demands
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council says public servants will begin a three-day warning strike on Friday, 2 October, if the Federal Government does not reduce petrol prices to ₦500 per litre and approve a wage award. The council said its earlier ultimatum also included starting negotiations for a new national minimum wage of at least ₦500,000 from 2027. It wants a tripartite committee set up urgently to prevent delays in negotiating and implementing the new wage. According to the council, petrol currently sells for between ₦1,450 and ₦2,000 per litre in many areas, and as high as ₦2,500 in some locations. It urged the government to support domestic refining and address petrol landing costs to ease the burden on workers and households.
