Practical Support for Depression and Suicidal Thoughts

Depression and suicidal thoughts can feel isolating, but you do not have to face them alone. Speaking with a trusted friend, family member, counsellor, faith leader, doctor or mental-health professional can be an important first step. Asking for help is a sign of strength. Take things one moment at a time. Drink water, eat something small, step outside briefly, or send a message to someone you trust. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, stay around safe people, remove access to anything that could be used for self-harm, and seek professional support urgently. If you are supporting someone, listen without judgement and take their concerns seriously. Stay with them if they may be in immediate danger, encourage them to contact a healthcare professional, and keep checking in. In an emergency, call 112 or 199, contact a local suicide-prevention or mental-health helpline, or go to the nearest hospital. You matter, and recovery is possible with support and treatment.
