Why Nigeria Should Be Cautious in Its Dealings With France
I have nothing against French people. My concern is Nigeria building close ties with a country whose actions in Africa raise serious questions. France played a leading role in the 2011 military intervention in Libya. It also faces continuing independence demands in New Caledonia. During the Nigerian Civil War, France was accused of covertly supporting Biafra while Britain backed Nigeria. I am also concerned about France's historical influence over some West African economies, its alleged role in African political crises, and colonial narratives that portrayed Africans as inferior. Nigeria should approach any relationship with France based on clear national interests and mutual respect. In my view, Nigeria has more to offer France than France has to offer Nigeria.
