Reps Advance Bill to Create National Renewable Energy Authority
The House of Representatives has passed the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025 for second reading. The bill proposes a National Authority for Renewable Energy to regulate and promote renewable energy development across Nigeria. The proposed authority would take over renewable-energy functions currently handled by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Rural Electrification Agency and the Rural Electrification Fund. Supporters say this could improve coordination, expand mini-grid and off-grid power in underserved communities, and encourage local manufacturing and jobs. The bill also proposes allocating 40% of the Rural Electrification Fund's annual resources to the new authority. It has been referred to the relevant House committee for further review.
