Trump Backs Infantino as Uefa Threatens Fifa Boycott

US President Donald Trump has warned Fifa against removing president Gianni Infantino, saying it would be a “terrible mistake.” His intervention follows mounting opposition to Infantino’s abandoned Fifa Forward Enterprise proposal. The proposal sought to create a company to manage the commercial and ticketing rights for Fifa competitions, including the World Cup, with a 21% stake to be sold to private investors. Uefa, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation accused Infantino of breaching trust over the plan. Trump praised Infantino’s leadership after the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The proposed investor group was expected to be led by Thrive Eternal, linked to American venture capital firm Thrive Capital. Uefa has threatened to boycott Fifa competitions and pursue legal action over the proposal, while Fifa has alleged a coordinated effort to undermine the organisation and its president.
