Consent Is Specific, Ongoing and Can Be Withdrawn at Any Time
Consent is a voluntary agreement to a specific act. It must be freely given, clearly understood and respected throughout an encounter. Agreeing to kiss, go home with someone or have sex at one point does not mean agreeing to every act or every person involved later. A lawsuit involving a former Cornell student has renewed this conversation. The woman alleges that an initially consensual encounter changed after more men became involved and she became increasingly intoxicated. The men named in the suit deny wrongdoing, and the matter remains under legal proceedings. Consent can be withdrawn at any time. Repeated pressure, guilt, anger or intimidation can make a person feel unable to refuse freely. A person does not lose their right to safety because they flirted, drank, visited someone’s home or previously said yes. A woman’s no is not the start of a negotiation. It is a boundary. Respecting consent means accepting that anyone can change their mind, without needing to explain or defend that decision.
