Should NYSC Suspend Postings to Security-Risk Areas Until Travel Routes Are Safer?
The abduction of prospective corps members travelling through Imo State has renewed concern about the safety of graduates posted to camps in security-sensitive areas. Gunmen reportedly attacked buses near Umunoha in Mbaitoli LGA on October 1, 2026, with several victims later rescued as security agencies continued efforts to locate others. NYSC says it works with the police, military and intelligence agencies, and the Federal Government has approved reforms including risk-sensitive deployment. The scheme has also relocated camps and adjusted deployments where security reports were unfavourable. However, the danger is not limited to orientation camps. Corps members can still face serious risks while travelling on highways to their assigned states. Telling graduates to avoid night travel is not enough when reporting dates and destinations are fixed. NYSC should clearly explain how it will respond when routes become unsafe, including delaying movement, changing deployments, relocating camps or arranging security escorts. Risk-sensitive deployment must protect corps members on the road, not only after they arrive at camp.
