Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ World Cup Ball Sells for £2.5m at Auction
The ball used for Diego Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal against England at the 1986 World Cup has sold for £2.5 million at auction in the United States. The ball was expected to fetch about £7.3 million but sold for $3.3 million. It remains below the £7.1 million paid in 2022 for the Argentina legend’s shirt from the same quarter-final. Maradona used his hand to score past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, but the goal was allowed to stand. Four minutes later, he scored the celebrated “goal of the century” after dribbling past five England players. Referee Ali Bin Nasser kept the Adidas Azteca ball for more than three decades before selling it in 2022. Authentication documents confirm it was the only ball used in the match.
