Tinubu Orders Major Reform of Nigerian Football After NFF Board Resigns
President Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football following the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and other board members. The reform will address weaknesses in football governance, administration, stakeholder representation, grassroots development, domestic competitions and accountability. Tinubu said Nigeria’s football structure must better reflect the country’s talent, public support and resources. He directed National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko to work with the NFF Secretariat and other stakeholders to maintain essential football administration during the transition. The process is expected to involve FIFA and CAF while protecting Nigeria’s international football obligations. The directive follows mounting concerns over the management and performances of Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for consecutive FIFA World Cups and the Super Falcons’ missed place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
