Anambra Moves to Prosecute Families That Deny Women Inheritance Rights

The Anambra State Government has directed the police to investigate complaints of women and girls being denied inheritance because of their gender and to forward case files for prosecution. The state Attorney-General said the practice is an offence under Section 22 of the Anambra State Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, 2017. Convicted offenders may face up to four years in prison. The ministry has assigned its Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Unit to handle these cases. The move follows court decisions that declared customs barring female children from inheriting family property unconstitutional.
