Arshavin said there is no clear favourite for the award but argued that Messi’s performances for Argentina at the World Cup and Inter Miami’s title-winning season make him deserving of the prize. Messi reportedly scored eight goals as Argentina reached the World Cup final, where they lost to Spain. He also scored once and provided two assists in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Benin Republic in what was described as his final international appearance. The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for 26 October in London.
