CNG Rollout Yet to Cut Transport Fares in Many States Despite Tinubu’s October 1 Push
Commuters in several states are still paying the same, or higher, transport fares despite the Federal Government’s push for cheaper trips through CNG-powered and electric buses. Checks across states including Anambra, Delta, Imo, Sokoto, Oyo, Ogun, Enugu and Edo found that limited bus deployment, inadequate refuelling stations and high vehicle-maintenance costs have slowed the expected relief. Transport unions in some states said they had not received CNG buses. Some states have recorded limited gains. Kaduna runs free CNG buses on selected routes, Enugu charges lower fares on government CNG buses, and Borno, Zamfara and Ebonyi have introduced subsidised electric or CNG transport options. However, these services do not yet cover enough routes to significantly reduce fares for most commuters. Officials say October 1 marked the start of monitoring the rollout rather than a deadline for every state to cut fares at once. Many passengers, however, say they are still waiting to see the promised savings in their daily transport costs.
