Bayelsa Football Clash Ends in Murder of Eniwari Youth
A friendly football match between Eniwari and Opuama communities in Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State, ended in tragedy on Saturday, June 13. A disagreement among players on the field sparked tensions. After the game, some members of the visiting Opuama team encountered 24-year-old Thomas Ogbianawei along the route between Eniwari and Fonibiri. They attacked him, and he sustained severe injuries. Thomas later died, leaving his community in mourning and raising concerns over rising violence at local events. Community leaders have appealed for calm and warned against reprisals. Bayelsa police spokesman DSP Musa Mohammed confirmed one arrest and said an investigation is underway.
