Ghana Eyes Electricity Exports to Nigeria Under West Africa Energy Hub Plan
Ghana says it wants to expand its electricity exports to Nigeria as part of a plan to become a major energy hub for West Africa. The country already supplies power to Togo, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso through regional grid connections. Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor said Ghana hopes to build enough generation and transmission capacity to meet local demand while supplying neighbouring countries. He said connecting Nigeria would require major expansion of transmission infrastructure because of the size of the Nigerian market. Ghana’s long-term plan combines natural gas, renewable energy and nuclear power. The government says a more reliable supply is needed to support its proposed 24-hour economy and industrial growth. Nigeria is also exploring alternative energy sources, including biogas from cassava wastewater. Researchers say properly treated cassava effluent could generate renewable energy while reducing pollution around processing communities.
