Coventry City manager Frank Lampard says Taiwo Awoniyi was restricted to a short substitute appearance against Arsenal because he is still building match fitness. Awoniyi came on in the second half of Coventry’s 3-0 opening-day defeat at the Emirates Stadium. Lampard said the Nigerian striker had only completed light training sessions in the previous 10 days, so a 20- to 25-minute outing was considered appropriate. The Coventry boss, however, praised Awoniyi’s early contribution and said the forward showed encouraging qualities despite his limited preparation. Awoniyi will hope to regain full fitness and compete for a regular starting place as Coventry battle to remain in the Premier League.
