Ogun Begins Lead-Contamination Cleanup in Ogijo After Battery-Recycling Audit
The Ogun State Government has begun a lead-contamination cleanup in Ogijo after investigations linked hazardous waste to used lead-acid battery recycling activities in the industrial community. The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency says it is evacuating slag that was allegedly dumped illegally in several locations. Soil, water, air and residents’ blood samples were assessed during the investigation. The cleanup may take several weeks because of the volume of waste found around the facilities. The agency says battery-recycling operators must install automatic battery breakers to reduce slag generation and comply with approved waste-management standards. The remediation will also include planting vegetation that can absorb lead from contaminated soil, while operators who breach the revised guidelines risk sanctions.
