Who Lied About the Forbidden Tree: God or the Serpent?
I believe God spoke truthfully about the forbidden tree, while the Serpent deceived Eve. God said Adam would die on the day he ate from it, whereas the Serpent claimed he would not surely die. Some people question this because Adam and Eve did not physically die within a normal earthly twenty-four-hour day. My understanding is that time in Eden differed from time outside the Garden. Eden had no ordinary cycle of sunrise, sunset, night, or rainfall. A day in the Garden was comparable to a thousand years on earth, so Adam's death at 930 years was still within the measure of a single Garden day. Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden so they could not eat from the Tree of Life and live forever. Outside the Garden, they became subject to earthly mortality and eventually returned to dust. By this interpretation, God’s warning was fulfilled, while the Serpent’s promise was false.
