Survivor Exposes Deadly Abuses at Owerri’s “Tiger Base” Detention Centre
A recent Amnesty International report reveals systemic torture, extortion and countless deaths inside the Nigeria Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Owerri, known locally as “Tiger Base.” Former detainees describe brutal beatings, waterboarding and prolonged stress positions. One survivor says he witnessed more than 27 deaths in a single detention block. He recalls waking up each morning to find dead bodies among the living. Families desperate for answers face extortion and blocked autopsies. The report details overcrowded, unsanitary cells where detainees squatted in turns. Some arrests stemmed from land or family disputes. Officers allegedly demanded large sums for bail and escaped prosecution despite Nigeria’s Anti-Torture Act. Amnesty calls on Nigerian authorities to investigate all allegations, prosecute those responsible and strengthen oversight of police detention facilities to prevent further human rights violations.
