Staple Food Prices in Ibadan Drop by Up to 48% While Palm Oil Rises

Staple Food Prices in Ibadan Drop by Up to 48% While Palm Oil Rises

According to a recent survey of Odo Ona Kekere and Apata markets in Ibadan, most staple food prices fell significantly between October 2025 and June 2026. Reductions ranged from 14% to 48%, while palm oil bucked the trend with a 20% increase. Rice prices declined from ₦75,000 to ₦60,000 per 50kg bag. Beans dropped to ₦75,000 and garri to ₦24,000. Groundnut oil slid to ₦30,000 for 15 litres. Vegetables like tomatoes and onions and protein items such as eggs and crayfish also became more affordable. Traders attribute the overall price decline to changes in supply, government policies, inflation trends, demand shifts, and transportation costs. Consumers are advised to compare prices across stalls and plan purchases to manage household food budgets effectively.

Noticed rice dropped by up to 48% but palm oil rose by 20 percent—this pattern feels oddly uneven to me.

I no dey sure these drops will last; palm oil climb fit just be start of another price hike for other staples.

Local co-ops could bulk-buy staples during this dip and store them for members when prices rebound, cutting costs in the long run.
