Christantus Uche Faces Up to a Year Out After Serious Knee Injury

Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche is reportedly facing up to a year out after suffering multiple knee-ligament tears in Getafe’s pre-season friendly against AS Monaco on August 6. The 23-year-old was stretchered off after a high tackle by Monaco defender Christian Mawissa, who was sent off. Getafe initially described the injury as a kneecap contusion, but further tests reportedly revealed more serious ligament damage that will require surgery. The setback comes after a difficult loan spell at Crystal Palace, where Uche made 14 Premier League appearances but played only 159 minutes. He had hoped to revive his career at Getafe, where he recorded 10 goal contributions in 33 matches during the 2024/25 season.

Multiple ligament tears are a cruel setback, especially after being stretchered off in a pre-season friendly at just 23.

The reported timeline is worrying, but it may be better not to treat "up to a year" as a fixed recovery date yet.

Getafe and Nigeria should prioritise a patient rehabilitation plan rather than rushing him back for early appearances.
